Mozilla Leadership Summit - Day 2
Alright, I’ve talked about the first day of Mozilla Leadership Summit in this post, so now let’s proceed to the second day.
24 January 2016
First session in the second day presented by the team from 270 Strategies. 270 Strategies is an agency who ran the election campaign for US President, Barack Obama. We talk about Case Studies of various campaigns to get us inspired on how to mobilize people through campaign. Here is some of the things about running a campaign that I jot down during the session:
- Begin with a story (story inspire people to do something)
- Being enthusiastic about it
- Talk one on one
- Persuade with picture
- Make it easy for the person you ask
- Go to where the people were
- Think what’s the benefit for them
After that first session, we were separated into our respective tracks. I stay in the tree top room since the next campus campaign session, which is Campus Campaign Planning 2 will be held there.
In that session, we divided into groups by our regional area. I teamed up with Pinoy’s team, since we’re in the same South East Asia. Then we did a little simulation on planning a campus campaign. Divine the profile of our target, and how the campaign will going, what’s the goal of our campaign, and sort of things. It always a fun session when there is Faye in the team. And I think we’ve come up with a pretty good idea to run a #AseanGotFoxed campaign that we will run in Scape University in Singapore (look people, how wild our imagination is :b).
Then the next session after lunch is the lightning talks and speed geeking session. The lightning talk is supposed to be held in the first day, but then postponed for unknown reason. But anyway, there are 11 talks in that session, you can see the list here.
After the lightning talks, we have to separate again into our respecting track. And as usual, the campus campaign team had their session in the Tree Top room so we stay to join the Campus Campaign Planning 3 session. We discussed about the structure for tracking a campaign & getting feedback of our campaign. In this session, we can choose to create our plan alone or team up with our regional team. Me and the other Indonesian Mozillian in Campus Campaign track decide to work together to figure out our plan.
Things goes on, and there come the time for the next parallel class. There are 3 class we can choose: Reps/Regional FSA class, IoT: demos and hacking class, or Building Developer Communities class. I join the Reps/Regional FSA class since I need to get myself updated about some reformation in the Reps program.
Then the last parallel class that I join was Influencing & Delegating class in the Arena room presented by Ali Spivak. Ali is from MDN team. I still remember what Ali said in that class that, “delegating is letting go of control”. And letting go of control is never easy so does delegating a work. I learned a lot in that last class since the topic is the thing that I struggle with personally. So, that’s how the Leadership Summit end.
Oh, we did a little surprise for Francisco Picolini in the wrap up session before we move to our farewell dinner venue. Flore get in the stage to represent LS participant to say thanks for Franc who prepare the logistic & some other things of this event. He was our superman, indeed.
The next day, me and 5 other Mozillian from Indonesia + William Q take the same flight to get back to Jakarta.
Weekend well spent to learn so many things. From personal leadership, to public speaking, and also some more important skills that not only improve ourselves personally, but also beneficial to build a better community that we can apply locally. We left Singapore feeling inspired and excited to work on our plan we’ve been discussed during the summit.
So Mozillian, let’s take back the web!
