Mozilla Leadership Summit 2016 - Day 1
Another Mozilla post after a long break. Yay!
Last month, me and the other 7 Mozillians from Indonesia just had a chance to attend Mozilla Leadership Summit in Singapore.
(LS) is part of the Global Gathering Cohort that set up by the awesome Participation team in Mozilla.
Me, and 4 other Mozillians from Indonesia come to Singapore a day earlier so we can explore Singapore without ruin our Leadership Summit activity. We went food-hunting in Chinatown, took mandatory selfie in Merlion, and went to the amazing Garden by the Bay in 22 Jan. We also join the welcoming session that day. Then there was the Leadership Summit began..
Day 1 , 23 January 2016
We went together from Park Royal hotel in Kitchener road to the venue by bus at 8 am. Our event held in Tree Top room in Scape, near Orchard road. Rosana open the first day session that morning. Then Mark Surman also went on the stage giving a keynotes. Another people from Participation team like George and Emma also went to the stage giving us a glimpse of Mozilla’s plan in 2016, what to expect and expected outcome from the summit, and also CoC (Code of Conduct) of the summit.
Then after a brief break, we straight to start the next session which is about Personal Leadership. I join the class in the Tree Top that facilitated by George. The facilitators then ask us to stand in group based on the result of the personality test that we took before the summit.
The personality test is based on the well-known Myers-Briggs Type Indicator with the following pairs of personality traits:
- Introvertion (I) or Extrovertion (E)
- Intuition (N) or Sensing (S)
- Thinking (T) or Feeling (F)
- Judging (J) or Perceiving (P)
The first trait is where we get our energy. The facilitator ask us what we will do if we have free time to not work on any Mozilla things. Introverted people tend to spend their free time to recharge their energy to do solitary activity like sleep or spend on some me-time activity. But in the other hand, extroverted are those who answer that they will go to party or another social activity in their free time because social interaction energized them.
Then the second trait is how we see the world and process information. In the session, George show us a picture then ask us to recall what we see from the picture. Sensing people tend to be more detail. They bring up the small objects that another people don’t realize. But the intuition people rather answer with a broader perspective like the dominant color of the picture or the atmosphere of the picture.
The third trait is how we make decisions and cope with emotions. Thinking individuals tend to focus on rationality and logic over emotions. But Feeling individuals are usually more empathic.
The last trait reflects our approach to work like planning & decision-making. Judging people is tend to be more organized, but Prospecting individuals are less organized but flexible and are very good at spotting opportunities.
And I scored as an INFJ aka the advocate with 54% introversion traits which prove my own claim as an ambivert. (;
I always love anything related to psychology so I feel so excited during this session. And it’s actually important to understand personality trait especially in a community where everyone has a different perspective. But we certainly have to make one decision that satisfy everyone in the community. It was an awesome session to help us make a better community.
Then the second session is about Personal Storytelling. During the session, they give us the following framework to create our own story:
- Challenge (obstacle & challenge we face in the beginning)
- Choice (what options you have and which one you choose)
- Outcome (the outcomes from the the choice we took)
- Ask (what you want others to do in addition to what happened)
After visualize our own story using that template, we’re asked to practice and share our stories in pair. It was a fun session and the template was a great framework that can be applied to create our own captivating story.
Then in the next session we separated by the focus area we choose in coaching call before the summit. There are 2 focus areas, that is Connected Device and Campus Campaign.
Connected Device : Volunteers in this track will focus to drive more innovation in IoT space.
Campus Campaign : Initiative to spread privacy awareness on campus.
Actually, I’d like to dive more into the Connected Device, but I decide to take Campus Campaign track since it more align with my contribution goal this year. In Campus Campaign, we were given a model campaign template that we can use to define our target, goals, strategies, tactics, metrics, and timeline to help us come up with a clearer plan after LS.
Then after the coffee break, we have parallel class that we can choose based on our interest. I choose the Public Speaking class.
Havi from the MDN team start the session but then we split up into 5 group with one Mozilla Tech Speaker in each group. I grouped with Flaki, Rina, Osho, and Axel. We were given 2 minutes to talk about our favorite presentation/talk and then the others will give us feedback to improve our public speaking skill.
I learned much things in this session like how to turn on the audience, how to make a good talk by eye-contact, or how to interact with the audience. And from that I also realize that there’s no shortcut in public speaking. We surely need a lot of practice to be a good public speaker.
Then the last class that I join is the Coaching & Mentoring class facilitated by Guilermo. In this class we discussed many things about the current mentoring system in Mozilla (especially Mozilla Reps program) & how to improve that system.
It was not only an exhausting Saturday but also the inspiring one. More story about the second day of LS will coming up soon. :’)
